How to Build the Perfect Holiday Wardrobe Without Making These Common Mistakes
It’s the holidays, and we have all things festive on our minds. The stores are full of beautiful pieces to wear throughout the season… And it’s just too easy to get caught up in the moment and just buy.all.the.pretty.things. But then… What likely happens is you end up with a large collection of fun holiday pieces that you may or may not be able to style with items in your closet. Then, you might find yourself standing in your closet to dress for an event and feeling like you have “nothing to wear”. Today, we are going to address this topic and share some of our favorite tips and tricks for dressing for the holiday season. Curious? Keep reading for: how to build the perfect holiday wardrobe without making these common mistakes.
Buying Too Much
Are you guilty of buying all the festive things when prepping your holiday wardrobe? Don’t worry—you’re not alone! The most common mistake we see with our clients is the tendency to overload your closet with new holiday outfits you might only wear once. We recommend that our clients opt for versatile wardrobe pieces that can be dressed up or down during the holiday season… And just as important, beyond! Think a sleek black jumpsuit, a cozy neutral sweater, or classic trousers. Pair them with festive accessories, like bold earrings, a sparkly clutch, or a swipe of red lipstick… And you are ready for every occasion! Investing in pieces you’ll actually wear again after the holidays is better for your closet and your budget!
Ignoring Neutrals
A natural extension of buying too much is ignoring the beautiful neutrals you already have in your closet. Rather than buying all bold or novelty holiday pieces that don’t mix and match, instead build your holiday looks by using neutrals as a foundation and adding festive accents. Ivory, grey, and black tones are a great place to start and easy to build off of for the holidays. Fabrics like silk, satin, cashmere, and leather add a festive element to your neutral look and can be enjoyed through the winter. There are so many ways to add festive accents to your look during the holidays! Ideas could include a velvet jacket, an embellished clutch, a red pair of heels, a statement earring, or a necklace stack.
Skipping Layers
Ever been to a holiday party and thought you might combust from the heat under your cozy sweater? Ladies, we know it’s cold, but don’t box yourself into just a bulky sweater on a cold night for a holiday party. Instead, use thinner base layers topped with festive coats, jackets, or cardigans to stay stylish and warm, giving you flexibility based on the temperature of your surroundings. Not to mention, this is the most fun way to add holiday textures to your look! Think a fur or faux fur coat, a velvet jacket, a blazer with some metallic threading, or a cardigan with some embellishment layered over a satin tank. Regardless, stay prepared for varying indoor temps by using multiple layers rather than one heavy sweater.
Overlooking Accessories
Picture this… Rushed as always to dress for a holiday party, you put together your outfit, dry your hair, and apply your make-up. You are pressed for time and decide to head out the door without putting much thought into your accessories. This is probably the easiest mistake to make this time of year – we all do it! But, it is so important not to forget how much accessories can elevate any outfit! Add holiday sparkle with statement jewelry, belts, bags, or shoes to make any look feel special for the holidays. Remember that the details is what makes an outfit feel polished and complete.
Not Prioritizing Comfort
We talk to our clients often about choosing outfits that are practical for long events or holiday travel… AND that are polished and stylish! It is possible to acheive both at the same time. For events, make sure you choose fabrics that feel good to you. Nothing too hot, itchy, or stiff, if those things bother you. And for goodness sake, choose shoes that are pretty but that you can stand in for long lengths of time! That mile high heel might be fabulous, but make sure you ask yourself if it’s doable. For long days of travel, focus on comfortable fabrics and flexible fits that work for all-day wear with lots of sitting, shuttling luggage, and eating on the run.
