Our Nashville Personal Stylists Talk Shopping For Mother Of The Bride/Groom
Our primary goal in helping a client to prepare for a wedding is making sure that they look and feel their absolute best. Oftentimes, when working with a Mother of the Bride or Groom, there is naturally a heightened sense of stress and emotion given the nature of the event… Particularly as it relates to what to wear. And understandably so, because there are so many things to consider! This is an area in which we can add tremendous value to the mother of the bride/groom, because we can help her to think through and balance all of the many considerations in a productive and intentional way.
For example, the mother of the bride/groom of course wants to look her best. But, there does need to be a balance of her looking fabulous but not outshining the bride. Many times, the bride likes to coordinate the wedding party’s attire somehow, so this can sometimes prove to be an added challenge for the mother. In our experience, we find most mothers do not want to wear the same color as the bridal party, but instead prefer a coordinating shade or color family. For instance, for a fall wedding where the attendants are wearing burgundy, a navy dress would be a nice option. It’s also important to know what other mothers and grandmothers may be wearing… Remember all of the pictures that will be taken and who will be standing in a group together for those!
How Does The Process Of Shopping For the Mother Of The Bride/Groom Begin?
When we work with mothers of the bride or groom, we strive to make the dress search as seamless as possible for them. We do all of the hard work for them… The initial searching, sourcing options for try ons, honing in on the winning dress, and pulling together a final look that they love and feel good in!
To get started, we ask a lot of questions in the beginning to gather as much information as possible to help us find the perfect look for the client. Things that we like to think about include…
- What is the venue for the wedding?
- Is it inside or outside? If it is outside, what will the weather and temperature be like?
- Is the wedding a day or evening event?
- Is there an official dress code for the wedding?
- What is the budget for the dress?
- Is a long or shorter dress preferred?
All of these questions help us to pinpoint a strategy to get started on the initial search. To start, we do a bit of online shopping. We pull some dress styles and colors for our clients to look at to get the process started. We like to pull from retailers that may be outside of the box, and locally we don’t always have great in person resources, so online sourcing oftentimes is the way to go! Then, we utilize the knowledge gathered from the feedback on the initial search to fine tune dress options. We order anything the client gravitates towards in that initial roundup, as well as similar dresses to those that we found in our initial searches.
Once dresses start to come in, we schedule a time to do a fitting with our client. This is when the fun really starts! Seeing clients in the actual dresses allows us to get a good feel of what works on their body. This is when we begin to narrow down the perfect look for them.
