A day in the life of a personal stylist 👗☕ — dress A day in the life of a personal stylist 👗☕ — dressed, out the door, and apparently attempting to carry half my house with me. Coffee, water, vitamins, a protein bar, and a bag of returns. Just the usual. 😂 Then a 45-minute drive out to my first appointment — a closet audit with a new client. I didn't get much footage while we were working because closet audits are really hands-on. We went piece by piece through her entire wardrobe, deciding what was working, what wasn't, and where the gaps were. Those two piles on the floor? Yeah, we did some editing. Once I got home I switched gears — pulled together a few looks for another client who has the U.S. Open coming up, using pieces we'd recently purchased together. Then it was back to my morning client, sourcing the pieces we'd identified as missing and adding options to her online closet so she has a clear direction for what comes next. She ended the day with less in her closet — but a much better plan for what should go back in. Here’s something I wish more women considered when Here’s something I wish more women considered when deciding whether something is “too expensive”: Cost per wear. Because expensive doesn’t automatically mean overpriced. And inexpensive doesn’t automatically mean a good deal. When I’m shopping for a client, I’m not just looking at the price tag. I’m thinking: How often will she realistically wear it? How many different ways can she style it? Does it work with pieces she already owns? Is the quality there? Will it still have a place in her wardrobe a few years from now? Then do the math. A $300 jacket you wear 100 times? $3 per wear. A $50 top you bought because it was “such a good deal” and wore twice? $25 per wear. So…which one was actually more expensive? 👀 The next time you’re debating a purchase, don’t just ask, “How much does this cost?” Ask yourself, “How much will this cost me to actually WEAR?” That doesn’t mean you should always spend more. And it definitely doesn’t mean expensive automatically equals better. It means the goal isn’t always to find the lowest price. It’s to get the most VALUE from the money you choose to spend. Shopping is one of the smallest parts of what we actually do. Before I ever pull a single piece for a client, I’m thinking about her real life. Where is she actually getting dressed to go? What does she already own? What does she reach for over and over again? What sits untouched? What makes her feel great? What is consistently making getting dressed harder than it needs to be? Because anyone can help you buy more clothes. The real work is figuring out which clothes will actually make your wardrobe—and your life—work better. Sometimes that means shopping. Sometimes it means realizing you already own exactly what you need and just haven’t figured out how to wear it. Sometimes it means identifying the handful of pieces that would suddenly make 20 other things in your closet more useful. And sometimes it means telling you that you absolutely do NOT need another version of the thing you already own seven of. 😂 A successful personal styling experience isn’t measured by how many shopping bags you leave with. A day in the life of a personal stylist 🛍️☕ — came A day in the life of a personal stylist 🛍️☕ — camel blazer on, coffee in hand, and a very large bag of returns to finish off from earlier this week. Anthropologie first, then over to the mall for Nordstrom. Once those were finally done, I shifted gears — because I had a personal shopping appointment that afternoon and a dressing room to set up. This is the part I love. Pulling pieces with a specific client in mind, thinking through what she already has, what's missing, and what makes sense to add for fall. Getting everything organized and ready before she walks in so that when she arrives, we can just get straight to the good part. She tried everything on, we talked through fit, made adjustments, and narrowed it down to the pieces that were really going to work for her wardrobe. And then Nordstrom was only stop one — we headed to Aritzia to round out the rest of the day. Returns in the morning, dressing rooms in the afternoon. This might sound strange coming from someone who l This might sound strange coming from someone who literally shops for a living, but… Buying more clothes is rarely the first thing I recommend. The best shopping happens after you understand your closet. Before we shop for a client, I want to know: What does she actually wear? What does she already have plenty of? What pieces does she love but struggle to style? What does her real life require? And what specific pieces would make MORE of her existing wardrobe wearable? Because shopping without knowing those answers is how you end up with a closet full of individually cute things…and somehow still have nothing to wear. And here’s probably my biggest shopping rule: Don’t shop for pieces. Shop for possibilities. Before you buy something, ask yourself: Can I immediately think of 3 ways I’d wear this—with things I already own? If the answer is no, it might not be the amazing purchase it looks like hanging in the store. As personal stylists, our goal isn’t to help our clients own MORE. It’s to make sure everything they buy has a job to do. Buy less randomly. Buy more intentionally. The length works with the shoes you actually wear. And you put them on without immediately wanting to take them back off… Suddenly half your closet starts making more sense. That top you never knew how to style? Works. The blazer you love but rarely wear? Works. Your favorite sneakers, flats, sandals, boots? WORK. And somehow getting dressed in the morning just got approximately 87% easier. 😂 So no, the perfect jeans probably won’t solve all your problems. But your “what the hell am I wearing today?” problem?
