Pick Six: Shorts for Summer
“Summer, Summer, Summertime…Time to Sit Back and Unwind”…imagine our best ’90s Will Smith impression here! It’s hot outside, and at a certain point, shorts are the only remedy for the heat, as much as we may dread trying them on in the store. Like swimsuits, shorts can be a little tricky as far as appearance and coverage go. Finding a flattering fit requires a little work. However, it’s so worth it when it’s 95 degrees outside and you’re not stuck in clingy jeans while hanging with friends at a backyard barbecue or rooftop bar, sipping on cool beverages and soaking up the sun. Let your legs breathe and feel confident at the same time.
We’re back with Pick Six to share some of our favorite shorts for summer. We’ve got a variety of styles for a variety of occasions. All five of our stylists (including April, our new gal from Atlanta…intro coming soon) pitched in to come up with this list, so you’re getting a well-rounded curation of summer chic.
1. DAILY DENIM
These Lover Baggy Cutoff Denim Shorts in Tamryn by Joe’s is a warm weather wardrobe staple. We love the distressing around the legs and pockets, and the classic blue wash. The high-rise waist and loose-fitting legs won’t constrict our bodies, and the three-inch inseam keeps it classy. Pair these with a plain white t-shirt and casual slides for weekend relaxation, or with a lightweight blouse and wedges for a fun night out.
2. COMFY COZY
If you need us, we’ll be in a hammock with our sunnies on, wearing these Tie Waist Safari Shorts in Washed Sand by Loft! That elastic drawstring waistband forgives all the ice cream we’re bound to eat on a hot summer day, and the linen blend fabric is super soft against the skin. We can see these with a cotton tank and floppy hat. Shoes not required.
3. BARELY BASIC
You know we had to throw a pop of color in here. These Riviera Shorts in Coral Blush by Loft have a four-inch inseam, and with a flat front and concealed zipper, they look good on everyone and with everything. This fleshy pink tone is swoon-worthy, but Loft offers many other colors you may like, too. Solid colors beg for a punch of pattern, so feel free to get creative with tops and accessories.
4. PATTERN PERFECTION
Solids are nice, but so is this checkered pattern! The high waist on these Helene Checked Wrap Shorts in Neutral Motif by Sancia is so slimming, and the tie waist is such a nice touch to wear something a little different. The side panels that wrap around to the front from the sides creates a tulip shape that is ultra feminine and flirty.
5. DELICATELY DETAILED
The scallops around the bottom of these Tailored Pique Shorts in White by Banana Republic Factory is a subtle detail that elevates these shorts from basic to uncommon. Crisp summer whites pair well with everything from swimsuit tops to dressy knits. Even a sleek, strappy black high heel can transform a white short look into date night attire.
6. EVENING ELEGANCE
Speaking of date night attire, take it one step further into evening territory with a satiny, menswear-inspired short. The High Rise Drapey Shorts with Belt in True Black by Gap is a great choice for going dressy with shorts. They have the same vibe as slinky black dress pants, but add a little edge by letting you show off some leg.
