Prepping Your Closet for Fall

Prepping Your Closet for Fall with Nashville Stylist Katey Preston

We have been having some glorious early Fall weather here in Nashville for the past week or so….  The skies have been clear and mostly sunny.  And the days are starting out chilly and heating up to the mid-70’s.  We have even been needing to reach for a jacket here and there!  The change in weather has many of our clients picking up the phone to schedule their seasonal closet audit.  In the spirit of cleaning out, we thought we’d share a few of our favorite tips and tricks when prepping your closet for Fall….

Prepping Your Closet for Fall | Let’s talk color…

It’s time to put any summery patterns – think tropical flowers, birds, etc. and neon inspired hues– at the back of your closet until next Summer.  Note that we are seeing a lot of saturated color this Fall – and front and center is hot pink – but these pieces feature rich hues, rather than a neon undertone.  And we are so loving seeing all of this color!  Remember for Fall, offsetting rich color with black leather and dark denim is the way to go.  And of course, your traditional Fall colors like olive, orange, and mustard are a go as well!  Floral patterns are also huge for this season.  But again, ensure that the colors are richly saturated tones rather than pastel or neon.

A Word About Tank Tops

It can be quite hot during September and even October in the Southeast, so don’t feel like you have to retire all of your tank tops quite yet.  A tank top in a fall hue paired with a denim skirt, or jeans is a fabulous early Fall look.  And it’s the perfect piece to layer with a lightweight jacket or cardigan.  Sort through your tanks one by one and put those that are super summery away for now.  Move those neutral and Fall colors we discussed earlier to the front and center.

A Note On Sandals

Even though it’s Fall, certain sandals get to stay in your closet for another month or two.  Go through your sandals and remove any that are in bright, summery or pastel colors, OR that contain summery materials like raffia.  Keep sandals handy that are warmer toned – think browns, blacks, and pewter….  Cork, suede, and leather are all great fall transitional textures for sandals as well!  A note on gold sandals….  Gold sandals are also great for another month or two, but only pull them out on warm and sunny days.  During the transitional months, read the vibe the weather is giving off that day when it comes to sandals in general!

Trends From Years Past

There are a few trends from past Fall seasons you might consider editing from your closet completely for now.  It’s probably time to retire your lace up wedge shoes and open toed booties.  Vests are hot this season, but look very different than those from the last few years.  Consider trading in your olive green utility or fur vests for quilted and softly puffed vests.  Many of us have beautiful tall boots – keep these in your closet, but instead of wearing them over your skinny denim, wear them with skirts and dresses!

We hope these tips were helpful as you begin to think about your Fall closet.  If you find yourself overwhelmed and wanting help to get started, needing an expert eye on your current pieces, or feeling stuck on what you need to add, we are here to help you!  Just contact us here for information on our closet audit services.
